Windows Server - Microsoft Ignite 2026 sessions, booth and pre-day
Windows Server has a rather useful lineup at Microsoft Ignite this year: the next release, Hyper-V, hybrid management and on-premises AI. Plenty to keep the infrastructure people interested 😊
It is a shame that two of the four main sessions are listed as in-person only for attendance, though. Not everyone can make a trip to San Francisco, and these are exactly the sorts of practical discussions that would be useful to follow remotely. There is an important distinction between attending online and watching a recording afterwards, which I have covered below.
Windows Server at Microsoft Ignite 2026
Microsoft Ignite runs from 17 to 20 November 2026 in San Francisco, with a free digital experience. The Windows Server team has four main sessions on Thursday 19 November, a separate pre-day workshop on Monday 16 November, and a booth in the Hub.
Official announcement
Elden Christensen also shared a reminder on LinkedIn, and Orin Thomas highlighted the announcement on X:
The four main sessions
All four are scheduled for Thursday 19 November. Times are shown in Pacific Time (PT), with the GMT equivalent alongside.
| Session | Time (PT) | Time (GMT) | Attendance | Recording | Speakers and focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TT1701: On-prem inferencing with Windows Server Table talk | 09:00-09:45 | 17:00-17:45 | In person only | Not recorded | Dan Cuomo leads a table talk on AI-ready server hardware, performance, security and the practicalities of running AI workloads on-premises. |
| BRK418: What's new and what's next for Windows Server Breakout | 10:15-11:00 | 18:15-19:00 | In person and online | Not listed on the session page | Neil Hinnant and Elden Christensen cover release news and a preview of the next Windows Server, including Hyper-V, Active Directory, storage, networking, security and AI. |
| THR897: Cloud management for every Windows Server Theatre session | 10:45-11:10 | 18:45-19:10 | In person only | Will be recorded | Theo Tran and Cindy Wan cover Azure Arc management, Extended Security Updates, hotpatching and SQL Server optimisation. |
| BRK419: From VMware to Hyper-V: Hyperscale virtualization in your datacenter Breakout | 13:30-14:15 | 21:30-22:15 | In person and online | Not listed on the session page | Jeff Woolsey and Davanna White demonstrate Windows Admin Center Virtualization Mode and cloud-connected, on-premises virtualisation with Hyper-V. |
The current timetable has a 15-minute overlap between BRK418 and THR897, so check the individual listings when planning your day.
What can you watch remotely?
As checked on 4 November, the catalogue lists THR897 and TT1701 as in-person only, but their recording plans differ: THR897 will be recorded; TT1701 will not. The two breakouts list both in-person and online access.
Microsoft’s overview says breakout and theatre sessions will be streamed or available on demand. That does not mean every session has a live online option. Register for the free digital pass through the Ignite registration site and check the individual session pages for viewing details and any changes.
I can understand why a small-group table talk works best in person, but having no recording of the on-premises AI discussion is still disappointing. At least the cloud-management session should be available to catch up on afterwards.
The Windows Server pre-day
PREB20 - Windows Server: Secure, manage, and accelerate with AI runs on Monday 16 November, 13:00-17:00 PT (21:00-01:00 GMT, ending 17 November), at Moscone Center.
This is a four-hour, demo-filled workshop led by the Windows Server engineers and product team. It covers managing servers across Azure, hybrid and on-premises environments, plus an early look at the next release: local AI, security, Hyper-V, Active Directory, networking and storage.
The pre-day is a separate, in-person-only add-on costing US$325, on top of the in-person Conference pass. It was added after registration opened and does not appear in the session catalogue.
- Registering now: choose the in-person Conference pass, then add PREB20 from the pre-day options before completing registration.
- Already registered: sign in to your registration with the same account, select Add a Pre-Day pass, add PREB20 and complete checkout. Check for the updated confirmation email, including your junk folder.
Seats are limited, so do not assume the main conference registration includes it.
The booth and a head start
The Windows Server booth will be in the Hub from 17 to 19 November. It is a chance to see demos and talk directly to the product team about upgrades, hotpatching, AI workloads and the things you need Windows Server to do.
For a head start before Ignite, Microsoft also points to the Windows Server Insider Program, where you can explore preview builds of the next version and provide feedback.
A good mix of practical server topics overall. I would just like more of those conversations to be accessible without needing a flight to San Francisco 😉
