Windows Server - Quick Machine Recovery comes to Windows Server 2025

Quick Machine Recovery is now available on Windows Server 2025 with the October cumulative update.

So anyone remembers CrowdStrike Falcon outage in July 2024 🤣

Quick Machine Recovery is largely Microsoft’s response to the CrowdStrike Falcon outage, where a faulty CrowdStrike security-content update caused millions of Windows machines to BSOD and become difficult to recover remotely. Which is why I think it is kind of a big deal 🤣

Quick Machine Recovery on Windows Server 2025

Official announcement

The feature is included in the October 13, 2026 cumulative update, KB5126646 (OS Build 26100.33650):

October 13, 2026—KB5126646 (OS Build 26100.33650)

Microsoft describes what it does:

Quick machine recovery is now supported on Windows Server 2025. During outages, Quick machine recovery helps recover devices from critical boot failures by using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to find and apply targeted remediations from Windows Update.

In other words, this is intended to help when a server cannot boot properly: WinRE can look for an applicable fix from Windows Update and apply it, rather than leaving recovery entirely to a manual process.

NOTE
Quick Machine Recovery is disabled by default on Windows Server 2025 editions. Administrators need to enable it through Group Policy. Recovery also depends on an applicable remediation being available, so it is not a general-purpose fix for every boot failure.

How to enable it

If you want to configure the feature, Microsoft has a specific guide for Group Policy:

Configure quick machine recovery by using Group Policy – Windows Server

For the feature overview and other configuration options, see Quick machine recovery – Microsoft Learn.
